It’s becoming hard to acknowledge the increasing numbers of gays and lesbians in Ghana. The Ghana AIDS Commission put out the shocking numbers a few weeks ago. Due to the stigma attached to being HIV, a lot of these infected persons find it hard to “come out”.

The commission estimates 30,000 of these individuals living among us. Another scary numbers they put out includes the number of female prostitutes living with full blown AIDS. 25% to be exact. The commission has cautioned people who patronize these prostitute to approach with utter care and always wear a condom.

Being gay or a lesbian in Ghana is now an open secret. The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and along with heterosexual) numbers in Ghana can be found in every facet of our society.

UNAIDS has lauded the country’s 1.6 prevalence rate and the systematic decline in new infections by 25% in 2011
