Government policy to implement the free Senior High School policy this year is not going to be Successful according to Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, for General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party.

According to him, the proposal by President John Mahama is just a “propaganda stunt” just to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.

Over 80 Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the three northern regions have delayed opening following delays in the release of feeding grants by government.

The schools are to re-open on April 21, 2015 but the students will have to stay home a little longer until the subvention is paid.

According to some school heads, they have no option than to let the children stay at home until the funds are released.

Nonetheless, Sir John, as he is also called, thinks the situation cannot be allowed to persist, especially in the education sector that moulds the characters of our future leaders.

Speaking on Classic News, he said, although education is considered a fundamental right that must be enforced to give access to all children of school-going-age, it appears to us that the problem is not limited to the three northern regions, but a national one as all the Senior High Schools are faced with how to cater for the students.

The government knows the implications of its failure to meet its obligations as the students will not be able to continue their education.

The former NPP Scribe indicated that, it will not be out of place for education to be accorded the needed priority attention, since it is the bedrock of any society.

Sir John is calling on the government to, as a matter of urgency, settle the arrears of the Senior High Schools so that they can run an uninterrupted academic session.
