Police in the Ashanti Regional Command is offering a GHC5,000 reward for anyone who provides information that will lead to the arrest of armed men who shot and killed a police officer on Thursday, May 19.

Corporal Frank Essel was shot several times in the ribs in his vehicle at the premises of Open Space Hotel in Dichemmuoso in Kumasi on Thursday, May 19.

According to an eyewitness, the masked armed men entered the hotel at about 9:00 p.m and ordered two receptionists on duty to lead them to rooms of guests in the hotel.

Although he could not state the number of armed men who stormed the building, he said he escaped after one of the men who had AK-47 guns shot a receptionist of the hotel. He said he later heard gunshots outside the hotel premises, which he assumed could be at the time the policemen was shot.

It is, however, unclear why the officer was at the hotel premises as he had his police uniform hanging in the front seat of the Benz car in which he was shot.

The Ashanti Regional Police PRO, ASP Yussif Mohammed Tanko confirmed to Joy News’ Ohemeng Tawiah that the deceased was not on duty.

“The investigators will try to find out why he went there, whether he went there on his own or maybe somebody might have called him when he heard the robbery and he went there to assist, we are not sure but investigations will unravel all that,” he indicated.

ASP Tanko appealed to the public to assist the police with any information leading to the arrest of the armed men.

He noted that the case has been transferred from Atwima to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigative Department for further investigation.
