Despite its deep ties with the country’s culture, marijuana is illegal in Jamaica.

The country has however made steps to change that, with lawmakers passing an act that decriminalizes it.

According to the new act, possession of up to 2oz (56.6g) of marijuana is now a petty offence that would not result in a criminal record.

Also, cultivation of five or fewer plants on any premises would now be permitted.

A licensing authority that will deal with regulations on cultivation and distribution of marijuana for medical, scientific and therapeutic purposes will also be set up.
