Despite his dreads, Canadian based Ghanaian artiste Kofi Mante doesn’t seem to have an interest recording a song filled with PATWA.
In a short interview with the Yen Da hit-maker, Kofi who is currently promoting his two new singles revealed his love for Dancehall but also added that, he won’t stress himself with Patwa because that’s not his culture and style.
Kofi added, the only thing that could make an African artistes highly recognized in any foreign country is to be original, and one could only be original by being them self.
He therefore advices Ghanaian musicians to stop imitating the foreign culture and focus on their local way of life. This to him will make the musicians receive the maximum attention artistes like Lucky Dube, Kojo Antwi, King Ayisoba, Ras Kimono and the rest receive when they step onto international stage.
Kofi added, these legends have performed for diverse fans and never changed anything about themselves or where they are from.
He mentioned artistes like Sarkodie, King Ayisoba, Kojo Antwi, Daddy Lumba, Bisa Kdei,R2Bees, Noella Wiyaala, Fuse ODG and some of the High life greats who have been able to win the hearts of foreigners with the way they have branded themselves with Ghanaian dialect and culture in their songs.
Asked if he can speak PATWA? Kofi answered - It’s not that I can’t speak Patwa. I just don’t see the point because I can learn how to speak patwa but I won’t learn it for the purpose of music. I am an african born in Ghana and half raised in Canada, so that is what you get in my music. Look at all the legends, let us talk about African Reggae legends for example Luke Dube, Alpha Blonde, Ras Kimono and others. They composed their songs to reach the masses through their perspective and with their accents. The international media tuned in because their songs were different. Do your research and you will discover that all the musical legends around the world were legends because they embraced who they were and it reflected in their music. I can imagine a Jamaican artist trying to compose a high life song, but I can’t picture that artist working extra hard to speak Twi on more than one song and shoving Patwa aside. To cut a long story short, I can compose any genre of music but I will be myself and be original.
