A one-hit wonder is someone who has a single so big, everybody expects him or her to become the next big thing in the industry. Then they find the path to fade, and begin to walk, or sometimes run, along it.

In this article, I’ll be talking about, in my opinion, 3 of the biggest flashes in the pan of Ghanaian music.

dr slim
1. Dr Slim: Born Mark Buxton, Slim’s ability as a rapper was never in doubt. What ultimately let Dr Slim down was his ability to write actual music.

Slim’s first single, SEKE which featured Dobble, was his one hit, and is arguably the biggest of all one-hit wonders. Seke was so big, it brought to him a lot of shows. It was that big.

Slim’s follow-up single though, Baaye, was quite popular, but was never played outside the four walls of a club thanks to it being devoid of any lyrical quality. The rapper had tried many avenues to get back into music, including working with Bisa Kdei, but mediocrity has refused  to SEKE.

The new information reaching me shows that he has even retired music and is in the corporate world.

2. Gasmilla: If music is the life of a party, then alcohol is its heart. In fact, it has been tested and proven that individuals, when infused with the right amount of alcohol,  do not even need music to dance. Gasmilla knew this, and he went on to produce what will be one of the greatest dance tributes in Ghanaian music ever.

Aboodatoi was so big, it earned him a lot. Both Ghana and Global. With a video shot in a very local hood, it was assumed that the Aboodatoi master had arrived.

After the release of Aboodatoi, Gasmilla went on to release another song in 2013,titled 3 Points, but couldnt penetrate that easily, and Gasmilla is still promoting his latest single, Letter To The Government which is nowhere to be found on dj’s playlist.

3. Trigmatic – Trigmatic is arguably the most active of the people on this list. The Nobody Knows Tomorrow singer continues to put in work, still releasing his last single about 5 months ago. But like every single of his after 2010, it has been slept on like an Ashfoam mattress.

Trigmatic’s ability as an artiste had never really been in doubt, with good songs like No One Knows Tomorrow, My Life, Baby Wait etc and his popular feature on Sarkodie’s Around The World, Trig finally hit the big one with his No One Knows Tomorrow. The song was a huge success, and coupled with the fans’ love for his speech impediment, Trig was everywhere.

Did we miss any one?
