Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi has set a new goalscoring record in La Liga thanks to his hat-trick at home to Sevilla on Saturday.

The fleet-footed Argentine struck with a brilliant free-kick in the 22nd minute of the game at Camp Nou to reach 251 goals in the Primera Division, thus equaling the record set by former Athletic Bilbao striker, Telmo Zarra back in 1955, Messi went on to score two more goals in the second half to set a new record of 253 top-flight strikes.

The Basque forward’s 251 goals came in 277 games, while Messi’s 253goals were scored in 289 matches for Barcelona

Messi, who is still was launched into the air by his  team-mates on Saturday following his second strike as the players rallied round to celebrate a truly magnificent feet by an extraordinary player.

Messi, who has been the subject of some absurd transfer rumors in the past week is already Barca’s all-time top goalscorer and now has 368 strikes in all competitions for the Catalan club.
