Is that time of the year once again where children, the youth and the aged go gaga for their fellow respective musicians to scoop an award under the year of review. I call it the numero un award scheme in Ghana no matter how bad or good it goes on that day, is still the top rated award scheme in Ghana. They call it Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
This year’s nomination list didn’t get much of negative complains as the exact nominees were packaged to their respective areas. With barely few hours more to the awards night the question people are asking is WHO WINS THE ARTISTE OF THE YEAR? It will interest you how this year’s nominees in this category are seriously campaigning and chanting to be victors during the night of music and glamour. Though we have seven artistes vying for this year’s nod, the dice for this year has been cast and artiste like Stonebwoy, Sarkodie and Daddy Lumba stands the chance to win the enviable nod though Guru, MzVee, Samini, and Edem are also in this category.
Judging from the streets the names chanting from music enthusiast is Sarkodie and Stonebwoy. But come to think of it do you know that the legendary singer Daddy Lumba is in that category? His song ‘Yentie Obia’ makes the legendary icon rub shoulders with the names (Sarkodie & Stonebwoy) on the lips of music followers. In the year 2000, he sets the pace for other artiste to follow after winning the award for the first ever Ghana Music Awards. Now after 15 years down the line the legendary icon DL is back for what he first took home. How much more can a Ghanaian ask for when a musician like Daddy Lumba after bursting on the music scene from the year 1980 and has been consistent till date. I always sit down and ask myself how he does that. It is not easy to rub shoulders with the young at heart musicians, even event organiser don’t put him on most of the annual shows yet his works and his personality does everything a single show could have handed him.
According to the board, to be awarded the artiste of the year nod, you need to get a hit song and an album under the year of review and from all the checks, Daddy Lumba is on tie with the other two musicians (Sarkodie and Stonebwoy) that is likely to win the accolade but his song ‘Yentie Obia’’ is a monster hit song which got the President John Mahama opting to buy the entire rights of the song and not forgetting letting Otumfour Osei Tutu 2 dance to it. This is what a monster song can do..
On the other hand, comparing the stages artiste in this category rocks you and I will agree that Daddy Lumba is odd in here. The classic stages he rocks are different from what the other musicians rocks so the question sets in then on what criteria will Charter House use to judge the nominees in this category since you have to rock most of the events under the year of review which Daddy Lumba and the other nominees has a different stage they rock to.
With no disrespect to the other musicians, though your works were enough to get you the artiste of the year award but better luck next time as the Legendary singer Daddy Lumba is back again to bag home what he started in the year 2000 this year. And again remember that Charter House has their way of rewarding Artiste of the Year and this year is not exceptional as NOBODY and I quote NOBODY can complain after the legendary icon is mentioned as the artiste of the year from the ‘toddlers’.*wink*
