School-ChildrenMr Chema Rodriguez, the West Africa Coordinator for EDUCO, a Spanish-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), has advised opinion leaders and policy makers to consider children as the most important national asset and invest in them for national development.

He said children in most cases were neglected and excluded in issues concerning their future, explaining, “When we all recognise that children are the most important asset in society and we place them above other priorities we would not only be grooming them for a better future but also building a better society”.

Mr Rodriguez made the appeal at the inauguration of an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, built for the Sahakpaligu Community in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality at GHC98, 000, to improve teaching and learning.

EDUCO funded the Tuma Kavi Development Association (TKDA) for the construction of the centre, which includes a three classroom block, a playground and head teacher’s office.

Mr Rodriguez said EDUCO had placed children high in its programmes and stressed the importance of providing teaching and learning centres, such as ECDs, for the children to receive a good foundation.

He assured them that EDUCO would continue to partner NGOs working to promote the welfare of children, especially in deprived areas.

The Reverend (Mrs) Sanatu Nantogmah, Tuma Kavi’s Programme leader, said the provision of the school block became possible because of the partnership agreement with EDUCO in 2013, which had seen the construction many of such centres in the Region.

She said the Sahakpaligu Community was chosen for the construction of the ECD because the nursery children were sitting under trees, which was not conducive for their growth and safety.

Tuma Kavi, she said, had built similar ECD centres at Dinga in the West Mamprusi District and drilled a mechanised borehole towards alleviating the perennial water problem confronting the Community.

Mr Abdulai Alhassan Red, the Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE) commended the two organisations for their contributions towards improving education in the Municipality and assured them that the Assembly would continue to lend its support to development partners.
